Štefan Čambal Book

Štefan Čambal, a native of Bratislava, was one of the most prominent football figures in the interwar Czechoslovak Republic and the first great Slovak football star. He won the amateur championship title of the CSR with I. ČSŠK Bratislava, which was the greatest success for Slovak football at the time. The peak of his career came in 1929, when he helped the club to a historic 8–1 victory over the English side Newcastle United, scoring three goals. Later, he transferred to the Czech professional team Teplitzer FK and subsequently to SK Slavia Prague, with whom he won four league titles and played regularly in the prestigious Mitropa Cup. His greatest success came with the national team, where he played every match at the 1934 World Cup in Italy and was the only Slovak on the team that finished as runners-up after a final defeat to the hosts, Italy.
